Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s natural precociousness springs up at every twist in the traveller’s tale. Sitanshi Talati-Parikh watches the ex-Miss World-turned-moviestar-and-homemaker switch from child to Inca queen, Bollywood dramatist to casual honeymooner, lost tourist to Disneyworld explorer, through loud giggles, flashing smiles, dramatic enunciations and passionate inflections, exploring a few of her many memorable journeys
A little girl sets sail for the world in an “enormous ship”. The romantic notion of travel becomes a kaleidoscopic reality, possibly even a way of life, with her “shippie” dad and family. It is the mid ’80s when Japan is “very disciplined” and China is yet to come into its own. Around a decade later, winning the Miss World pageant makes her “a cultural ambassador of India” in places unpronounceable. And through it all, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has felt the power of being Indian, of coming from “a world within the world”.
Since then, there have been movie shoots in exotic locales: from a desert full of water bodies in Latin America to remote towns in India, brand endorsements in cobble-stoned Europe, and the world becoming a stage, literally, with performances like the Unforgettable World Tour. “I will go out and experience a place, I won’t live in an ivory tower, while gauging it and being responsible. Ever since Miss World, people have given me a lot of love – whether you call it recognition or adulation, they have always been expressive in their connectivity with me. When they saw me on the streets, it wasn’t like ‘Ay, Aishwarya!’ – women would come forward blessing and embracing me.”Always politically correct, her carefully polished voice modulating with occasional bursts of enthusiasm, the intrepid traveller sits easy, knowing that the subject of the day is one she can be naturally passionate about. She points out that while the world advanced technologically, becoming a “smaller place”, her life mirrored the advancement: “Everything became from a 14-hour or 18-hour flight to ‘just an overnighter’, because you started doing it so often. Abhishek (Bachchan) and I love flights – we’re psychotic that way.” And, as she inevitably spends an exorbitant amount of time in transit, the covert people watcher admits “feeling a lot for elderly Indian passengers who walk around staring at monitors. Airports can be overwhelming – with the distances, pace, people and security checks; and while they have become second nature to me, I can still relate to how the experience can be for the uninitiated.”South Africa: “I had a funny feeling inside me – looking outside the airplane window – a sense of going away.”There are three times that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan recalls feeling this way, with a distinct sense of poignancy. It began with the flight to South Africa as she left to compete for, and win, the Miss World pageant title in 1994. “I suddenly felt that I would be away from everyone and alone for a month. And the thought of being with a whole lot of people foreign to you; but when you get there, you just fit in. I don’t know if it was a premonition or not, but I sensed that life was changing.”London: “When you land there in winter, you barely wake up from the jetlag and feel that it is dark, like night again.”
In London, where she was to spend a year as the reigning Miss World, she had the option to have her own apartment or to live with a family in their house. “And I, being the responsible one, chose to stay in a house with a very sweet elderly couple rather than alone in an apartment, knowing my family would feel more secure. It’s a very Indian thing.” It was the first time she was living on her own: “For further studies I never went outside of Mumbai, because my father was a marine engineer, and it was just my brother, mum and I living together; I would feel for my mother and didn’t want to leave her and go away.”Shanghai: “Suddenly Shanghai was an absolutely different city, and the world was beginning to talk about the change in China.”
It was a very different China during her repeat journey in 1994, when she went as a model with Hemant Trevedi. “Shanghai was a symbol of that change – the modernisation and globalisation, like the US on this side of the world. This was a new culture, very much in keeping with the times or ahead of the time. Very interested in India and Indian fashion and it was almost a privilege to be there with our fashion and our designers.”China: “This time I was shooting a song on the Great Wall doing a little jig!”
In 1994, she had walked up to the fifth gate of the Great Wall, with a “more grown-up taking away, recognising the passion of generations working on building this incredible wonder that we live with on our planet”. She was back on the Great Wall as an actor, shooting the song Poovukkul, which showcased the Seven Wonders of the World, for Shankar’s Jeans. “You never know when you are going to revisit a certain part of the world. As a kid, when I was there in the ’80s, they took us to a uniquely Chinese opera, and sang some of our Hindi songs, with all the Chinese in the audience looking at us because we were the one Indian family sitting there. You’ve heard of people in China and Russia listening to our music, our film songs, and then to think, on my third visit there, I was shooting a song, with a live audience of people fascinated by our cinema and the song culture of our movies.”Times Square and historic sites: “I am an actor – it means you have to do everything!”
Dancing atop the Great Wall – did it feel ridiculous at all? “Interestingly enough, never,” Aishwarya answers decisively. “From the beginning, I never felt odd. When shooting for Aur Pyar Ho Gaya, I remember Bobby (Deol), even though he belongs to an actor-family, feeling a bit odd when we had to do ridiculous things in public arenas, like jump on a car, or run on the street with a toothbrush in our hand and toothpaste on our face.” Or the time when she was in New York City shooting for Aa Ab Laut Chalein in Times Square wearing a fuschia pink gown with a bow, big earrings and a flower in her hair. “I had no inhibitions. You’ve grown up watching it, song and dance is so much a part of our cinema that you don’t feel silly doing it.”Disneyland: “We both were like excited kids – free, happy and wonderfully reliving our childhood.”
A youthful exuberance springs up as she recalls memories of the past. “That family trip (’80s) that started with Japan ended with Disneyland, and Abhishek and I ended our honeymoon – after Bora Bora’s ‘drop in the ocean’ experience – in Disneyland. It wasn’t planned, but worked out beautifully into a great circle.”Tunisia: “In my interviews, when I say ‘Every day I feel like a newcomer, or every day is like the first time’ there are those special moments when I actually feel that, very, very strongly.”
The third time she felt “the pit of the stomach feeling” was when she took off to shoot for “one of the best film experiences”, The Last Legion in Tunisia and Slovakia. “Not only did I have no one from my nationality on the crew, it was a guy flick – everybody was a dude! I was going to be a warrior, this action character. I was feeling it again: going away for a very long period, and I had to step away from very interesting work that was happening here. I had gone through that predicament too many times in my life and career: ‘Heck, all good things happening, do I have to choose?’” Without any idea of the geography of Tunisia, she was bowled over by the spectacular beauty of the country. She arrived three days before the shoot, without rehearsal. “Everyone was in panic mode, but my dancing helped me, I embraced action instantly. Beautiful Mediterranean water, very hot and warm…a bit much in the costumes, with all that armour! The places were so quaint and simple that we all became that much closer as a group.”Slovakia: “These guys are HUGE. When you sit on these buggers, you don’t walk straight for two days after.”
Slovakia was familiar because she had been to Prague. She found the “cold (weather) and green” country replete with beautiful castles. “We were all like kids. We had so much fun working together, and such incredible discipline – whether it was Colin (Firth) or Sir Ben (Kingsley) – we were like children in a giant videogame.” And the most remarkable experience was spending time on horseback. She emits a loud, expressive laugh: “The horses in Tunisia are one size and then you get to Slovakia and you realise that the horses there are different. These guys are HUGE. When you sit on these buggers, you don’t walk straight for two days after!”Budapest: “Ajay kept telling Sanjay (Leela Bhansali) that the two things he dreaded the most, dancing and singing, were what Sanjay made him do in the film.”
Budapest was special because Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was shot there, for which she got her first Best Actress award. She recalls with a smile, the dance sequence with a rather nervous Ajay Devgn. “It was exceptional because it was an insight into their culture – the music and dance sequence was local to the place. So you actually experienced something unique, apart from the magnificence of being by the river and bridge. Also, we saw very few children in the country, and then we realised that they were encouraging people to have more children because of the mortality rate. Apart from the cuisines, it is always interesting to come away with an insight into the place. For me, it is not about hitting the shops; it is about getting to know a place.”Brazil: “I was reliving my college days, being vicariously part of a gang of childhood friends.”
After Columbia during her Miss World reign, she was back in South America much later, when shooting for Dhoom 2. “The genre of the film we were working on made us relive our college days. I was privy to a close unit of kids (Abhishek, ‘Duggu’ Hrithik Roshan and Uday Chopra) who are childhood friends, and felt that I was vicariously part of the gang. Brazil offers that kind of spirit, the film gave that kind of energy.” Her eyes take on a faraway look as she recalls a surreal moment towards the end of the Dhoom 2 shooting schedule. They lay sprawled below the “magnificent” Christo, in the wee hours of the morning, before Hrithik Roshan was returning to his son being born. “We were in that woozy state of mind, because we had stayed awake the previous day and night and were watching the sun rise. It was a very quiet time, the early morning hour before the tourists arrived. We had had such a noisy schedule, all of us buzzing throughout, that it was the best silence we all shared. As we lay on the ground, we felt that Christ was looking at us from the skies. You hear terms like, ‘listening to the sound of silence’, but we experienced it then.”Machu Picchu: “In my little bling feathered costume, I looked like one of the Inca queens.”
Shankar’s Robot took her once again to “the other side of the world”. She had taken a break from her career for the first time in her life. “I was facing the camera after an unexpected eight months all the way in Machu Picchu (Peru).” It was the longest journey they had made – counting the kind of flights, number of flights and locations. Upon reaching the place, a tiny township, after a train journey, they all walked from the railway station dragging their bags on the road. “As we trekked along, we suddenly passed a marketplace. My staff was exhausted, but I was thinking, ‘What an adventure!’ I love walking, because we don’t do that enough, and you actually get to feel the pulse of the place, get in contact with the people and culture, otherwise it could well be structure to car, car to airport, airport to plane, plane to car, car to hotel.”Mexico City airport: “I was the pride of India and all that – and I didn’t have my passport. This was the worst moment for me.”
With her valet in tow, and running a fever, Aishwarya was connecting via Mexico City en route to Melbourne, Australia, representing India in a performance at the Commonwealth Games. Special Services, who had come to help them with the language barrier, disappeared with their passports. “It was bizarre. People there would smile a lot and look blank, because they didn’t speak the language.” She was taken to a private room that was empty save for two people who could be guards eating a home-cooked meal. “It was like the movies – being in a prison cell and these guys going at their meat sauce and bread. They would say something to each other and keep smiling at me. My valet has piercing eyes, so I would keep telling him to smile and keep his face easy. I suddenly felt I had to be protective and get us out of here. I had never felt that before. I wasn’t getting through on the phone to anyone and at one point I felt myself go a bit cold. I had wanted to visit Mexico, but this was not the adventure I was looking for!” After an encounter with a man who spoke perfectly-accented English and suddenly refused to speak any, to a bunch of “strong-looking women” who used the word “off-loaded”, Aishwarya nearly gave up. And then suddenly, in the crowd she spied the person who had disappeared with their passports and chased him down. “He was carrying our passports in his hand, and till date I have no idea why.”Los Angeles: “With time, travel, age and experiences, you begin to like the easier, more social pace of LA.”
After boarding the flight from an eventful Mexico City, she was transiting through LA to catch her Melbourne connection, hoping to make it in time to perform. “I reached LA and suddenly life was beyond fabulous. It was the one time I cherished being who I am, in terms of the celebrity life. Suddenly, it was beyond comfort, think all superlatives. I always say that once in a while, if it gets too comfortable, God just does a little schickt (demonstrates a click with her fingers like playing carom). He’s watching his own little rom-com, thinking, ‘I want to have fun with you’. So I think, ‘Enjoy it, and turn it when you want to.’”New Zealand: “The life that we lead, we are like gypsies, nomads, and I’m very quick to feel at home in any place in the world.”
She’s spoken a marathon, and yet looks like she can go on. I’m right; this would make a coffee-table book. “We don’t realise how quickly time flies and because a part of our life gets captured on celluloid forever, I feel as actors we live lifetimes within our lifetime.” She is off to join Abhishek in time for his birthday, in New Zealand where he is shooting, in a place she has never been before. Some people are meant to be children of the world, explorers in their own right. “And yet, when one travels so much, there will always be something unique to being home. It is your family that makes home what it is – it’s not the physical structure even if you say bed and all of that. I live a very homely life in the places that I go to. Besides, as Abhishek rightly puts it, one in six is an Indian: you can go to the farthest of places and we (Indians) will be there, saying, ‘Hello, you want home-cooked food?’ That’s the best part about Indians – they are there to feed you. You are at home anywhere in the world.”

Top Hindi cinema actresses today: ranked according to their acting and power quotient
1. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: Star Performer
She has immense star power. From an intensely wooden actress-cum-model to one of the most powerful actresses in Indian cinema today, she has come a long way. I believe Sanjay Leela Bhansali is responsible for turning her into a versatile performer. Post Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, she metamorphed into an actress with considerable histrionic power, only one which she needed to tune and control - she was prone to overacting at the time. After her Bengali cinema and Raincoat phase, she became a much more controlled performer - think Jodhaa Akbar. Besides being absolutely stunning to look at, she remains hugely iconic as a searing beauty and talented actress. She is very promising in the slew of movies lined up 2010: Robot, Action Replayy, Guzaarish.... She is both, star and actor. Which is why she still tops the list, despite being much older than most of the newer lot below.
2. Priyanka Chopra: All Rounder
She ranks in my list above Kareena Kapoor, despite the latter's longevity in the industry, simply because Priyanka makes less mistakes and isn't prone to overacting. Priyanka is a far more controlled performer, and a very balanced actress in terms of looks, charisma, versatility and acting. She is more an actor than a star, which in my books means a lot more than the other way around. She doesn't have the raw talent of a Rekha, Madhuri or Vidya Balan, but she has a winning combination - versatility (proved with her movies ranging from Kaminey, Aitraaz, Dostana, Fashion to Anjaana Anjaani), a breadth of expressions and emotions, which prevents her from getting monotonous on screen, great vivacity - which makes her a hugely watchable actress - she suffuses the screen with her presence and a very earthy appeal. When styled well, she looks great too. Obviously she is a hard worker and a quick learner, becuase she is extending her range as she goes along, proving her mettle in the talent game. I believe we have great things to see from her, yet.
3. Kareena Kapoor: Drama Queen
Histrionics, over-acting, over-dramatization. These are, what according to me, hold Kareena back from being a fabulous actress. She has immense talent, and with the right director (think Imtiaz Ali for Jab We Met, Santosh Sivan for Asoka, Sudhir Misra for Chameli and Vishal Bharadwaj for Omkara) she turns into a powerhouse performer with controlled histrionics, without the annoying traces of Kareenaism. Kareenaism is fun to watch as long as it is in the limited avatar of Poo (Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham) or as the character of Geet (Jab We Met), but really not all the time. She brings a certain vivacity to the role, but more often than not, she remains more Kareena than the character (which is what Shah Rukh is also prone to do), making it wonderful for her fans, but not appealing to those who want to watch the movie and character unfold.
4. Deepika Padukone: Growing Stunner
Her smile (which reaches her eyes) and her dimples simply distract you through the film enough that you don't really care that she isn't doing much. That was Deepika Padukone in her first film, Om Shanti Om. Ever since then (despite making some terrible choices like Housefull and Chandni Chowk to China), she has worked to prove herself. She improves with every film she makes. There was not much difference in her roles in Bachna Ae Haseeno (where she delivered stilted dialogue) and Love Aaj Kal (where her dialogue delivery improved, but her character remained dull - due to the requirement of the script). In Karthik Calling Karthik, she began to open up with some of her old vivacity, and has really come into her own with Lafange Parindey. She is a fabulous clothes horse, great to look at, and an obviously hard worker and learner, but I do hope she doesn't slide downhill with what appears to be limited expressions and a dose of overacting visible in the promos of Break Ke Baad, while Khelen Hum Jee Jan Se appears to be a promising role that would show off more of her newly-honed talent.
5. Vidya Balan: Talent Unlimited
What's stopping this hugely talented - one of the most talented actresses we have today - actor from swinging it into the big league and top of the list is the lack of star power. She is an excellent actress and performer, but it looks like she will go the route of Tabu - critical acclaim, more art house than mainstream. She is wasted in candy-floss movies, and unfortunately candy floss is what builds mainstream appeal.
5. Katrina Kaif: Screen Diva
Katrina is hugely watchable - a great looker on screen, and that's about it. But simply because she is so watchable, despite not being able to really act much (I only liked her in New York), she tries pretty hard and she's won the audiences over in terms of screen presence.

6. Sonam Kapoor: Maturing Slowly
Sonam is pretty and lively. She fits the bill of an Aisha perfectly, she was great as Bittu in the horrendous Delhi 6 (possibly the only good thing about that film besides its songs) and she was watchable in I Hate Luv Storys, because Imran and she look so good together. However, she has limited expressions, which became very obvious in Aisha, because she faced so much screen time, and she needs to work on her breadth of expressions and quality of acting, otherwise she would remain typecast in the pretty-girl-next-door genre. And of course, a huge plus that she has unbelievable style. She can carry off a coarse jute bag and make it look stylish.
When The Masks Slips....

In a special media partnership with IIFA, Verve collects the memories, candid moments and some extraordinary quotes from the stars that glittered on the green carpet at IIFA’s 10th anniversary celebrations in Macau. Sitanshi Talati-Parikh shares her weekend diaries, where her conversation with the stars veers between dark and light
I think it can all be traced to our first few moments in Macau – at the ferry terminal, sans conveyor belt for our luggage collection. Harried-looking local baggage handlers were pounding in and off-loading massive amounts of luggage onto a corner alcove, while the entire flight’s passengers – all headed to IIFA – looked on in bemused silence. Designer Anamika Khanna standing lost and bewildered clinging onto her bags, Farah Khan’s plaintive cry for help directed at brother Zayed, while the latter scouted around for local help and Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor’s stealthy exit, all established the premise of the diaries of stardom. Ferry terminals, I have decided, are great levellers.As I ate meals with some of the actors and directors who were courageous enough to step out of their room and walk the massive hallways of the excruciatingly large Venetian Macao-Resort-Hotel, I found them to be relaxed outside their domain. This was a work-vacation, where they would be winning awards amid great fanfare. I watched Farah Khan working through the day setting up her dazzling designs – sported by many a star on the green carpet as well as the fashion runway. With Hrithik and Sussanne Roshan being her show-stoppers, the crowd couldn’t help but take their eyes away from the sparkling jewels. Farah Khan’s personal style mantra? “Never over-accessorise. Don’t draw people’s attention by wearing too much bling – let your true personality come out.”And then true personalities began to come out: the scales tipped a little towards the dark side, with the Cirque du Soleil-esque masks slipping and the layers of make-up barely concealing discomfort. What happens when a popular star walks past and steals the show? The moment an Abhishek Bachchan or a Hrithik Roshan would stroll past, they would get mobbed in seconds, while a talented Vinay Pathak would walk along practically incognito. With Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the forefront, Mugdha Godse was barely noticed on the green carpet. Or Lara Dutta, who was noticed, not just for her lively presence and wit, but also for stepping up to the podium uncalled, claiming that Riteish Deshmukh, Boman Irani and she were (for the weekend) “joined at the hip.”The crowd who had gathered over the days just for that one big celebrity sighting, often paying hefty sums of money for show tickets, spent most of their time hanging onto the barricades or prowling the passageways in search of their favourite stars. There were subdued murmurs of, “Where are the big stars? These are the young upcoming ones!” Ah, the price of fame – being a nobody is better than being a minor celebrity!Walking down the green carpet, Abhishek, forever the doting husband, was not left with any option but to lose the charming veneer and adopt a stern countenance with a group of fans that were jostling too close to him and Aishwarya. On the other hand, Arjun Rampal’s condescension and Anil Kapoor’s flicker of impatience with what can only be feigned disinterest as their fans collected and tried to get their autographs, made me wonder how it is possible to be so dismissive of those that have made them stars? Maybe, they were just tired? You could tell that the gentleman was tired. The eyes had dark rims and they were red – with exhaustion or lack of sleep, or both. But he went on. As a reporter said, “When he talks, we have no choice but to listen.” IIFA brand ambassador, Amitabh Bachchan held every single person’s attention when he said: “We believe that cinema binds communities together. When we visit the cinema and we sit in a darkened hall, we never ask who is the person sitting next to us – we never ask whether he is Hindu, Muslim, Sikh or Christian; or what caste or race he is; or what nation he belongs to. We all sit there enjoy and love the product that we see. We sing the same songs, laugh at the same jokes we cry at the same emotion. What better example of integration than Indian cinema?”I asked him (for our thematic 75th issue) what he would define as the darkest period in Indian cinema. Not finding the question to be from the common mould, he asked for it to be repeated, and then in his commanding voice answered: “Cinema is a creative art and anything that restricts creativity can be termed the darkest era. When you restrict creativity, you challenge the very tenet of democracy, of freedom of expression – much like that of the press. If you say that you can only paint a painting in two colours, that is restricting creativity. That cannot happen – in a free world, in a free country as India is, we need the freedom of expression; keeping within the laws of the nation and the culture of the nation.”Cushioning a star ego is a task into itself and with every expression, one can and must read between the lines. Amitabh Bachchan had a priceless expression when asked by a media person, “Bahut stars nahin aaye, to is time kya IIFA thoda thanda lagta hai? (Isn’t IIFA less glamourous this year – with so many stars not present?)” Taking barely a moment to recover from his amazement – I mean, who asks the Big B this sort of question? – he replied flippantly to appreciative laughter, “Aap hain to thanda kaise hoga? (With you present, how can you say the glamour quotient is missing?)”
The media were at their crass best, often behaving like buzzards – circling their prey and then swooping in for the kill. As I sat near Sushmita Sen and Govinda, waiting in dignified repose for a moment to ask my question, a young lady (if I may dare call her that) of TV origin came and sat on top of me – assuming that would be the best vantage point from which to force her questions. It required my highest level of meditation techniques to not throw her onto the cameraman crouched below. Sushmita, having lost most of the weight she had recently gained, looked stunning in sleek animal prints that showed off her tall, confident persona. She fielded questions (about her ‘fitness mantra’) with cultivated finesse – a reminder of her days as a beauty queen.Talking about beauty and confidence, one simply cannot leave out Anushka Sharma. Barely a film down, and a mere modelling career behind her, this newcomer stood out with astonishing self-assurance and poise. Always well put-together, she finally had to exclaim, “I am running out of adjectives to describe the experience!” when repeatedly asked about her resounding success in landing a double whammy for her first film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) – the Yash Raj banner and Shah Rukh Khan. “I won’t sign films simply because I want to have a bigger house or car,” said the young girl – as if proving that she isn’t out to “play the number game.” Prevented by good sense and daddy dearest from playing the number game, is the very tall and very good-looking Sonam Kapoor. Vivacious and friendly, she awaits her coming of age in her next film – where she plays Jane Austen’s Emma. When the media questioned her about the answers to life, she looked bewildered. “I am still growing up as well – I can only find answers through trial and error. It is scary to have the kind of responsibility where you are asked questions about how things should be.” She was a tomboy growing up – “If you look at the so-called big stars of the past few decades, they are not the ultra-glamourous, big hairdo, lenses-wearing women. Think Nargis, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, Sridevi. And they are the biggest stars. Madhuri (Dixit) is absolutely beautiful in Sailaab (1990) without her hair blow-dried in Humko Aaj Kal Hai...with hardly any make-up. Every generation has a naturally beautiful and spontaneous star. India accepts these stars.”
Aspiring star Sonu Sood, best known for his role as Sujamal in Jodhaa Akbar (2008), strives to choose roles with character. The tall actor (hailing from an engineering-and-some-modelling background) was mild-mannered and respectful of the seniors that abound in the breakfast hall, leaving the interview in deference to a veteran director who came to speak to him. Not before he remarked, “All my characters have had grey shades – in Yuva (2004), in Jodhaa Akbar. Every person has some kind of a grey shade. It connects with a cine-goer. Pure whites are not going to touch the hearts of the audience – it is the grey that matters, that adds colour.” Riteish Deshmukh has apparently gained sincere popularity for his comic timing – as evidenced by the little race that took place in the hotel lobby – where he was being chased by some fans (an entire family, no less) and the guards were chasing the fans. It was a real-life comedy, where we of course, followed suit to see how it all panned out! The actor, who is also an architect, was candid when he said: “A film was offered to me, and I love films, so I gave it a shot. Comedies worked – if people find my comedy palatable, then I’m really grateful! I cannot force my stuff onto people – I choose films based on my sensibility or on what I think people might like. I like to face reality – I don’t like to think about things that could be a possibility – I am not delusional. Coming from a political family, loads of people thought that my first film was because of my father, who was a politician then. I don’t hold it against them, because if I was in their place I may have thought the same! I had to work hard so that people would call me Riteish Deshmukh and not son of Vilasrao Deshmukh – though I take great pride in being his son.”
He drove the audiences to a state of euphoria (definitely more than Peter Andre’s powerful performance – my colleague Arti may disagree) with his impromptu rendering of a number from Rock On!! Farhan Akhtar was accessible, even a little endearingly nervous while facing the media. His presence was subtle, and his talent immense. “It is important for me to find a character that is real – no person is black or white, no one is just good or just bad, people change depending on what life puts in front of them, or the circumstances and changing situations that may befall them. The character of Luck By Chance (2009) was fascinating, because he was so real – so driven by success that he was willing to put his morals and his ethics aside. To still make him enjoyable to watch and on some level identify with the fact that everything that life has offered him and the decisions that he has made, albeit wrong in retrospect, seemed like the right thing for him to achieve whatever he wanted to achieve. It was so interesting.”
Neil Nitin Mukesh, an experimental role-player who stayed out late partying and greeting everyone with exceptional deference, would agree. His leaning towards the darker roles has him playing Parag Dixit – a youth jailed for a crime he didn’t commit – in Madhur Bhandarker’s next, Jail. “I started my career by getting out of my comfort zone. I want it to be a challenging career. The reason I choose dark films and characters is very simple – they are more interesting. Where else do you get the chance to actually evolve as a human being?” As I happened to be sitting next to the scriptwriter, Anuraadha Tewari, she remarked that with Jail, “Madhur’s [Bhandarkar] layering has gone from black and white into grey – less judgemental than his original films.” On the flight back with the man himself, who plans to shock audiences with a comedy – albeit “sensible humour” – soon, Madhur Bhandarkar emphasised, “My movies represent contemporary society, with characters with grey shades or starkly black and absolutely positive. I try to combine realism and fiction. People think my movies are an exposé – I disagree. I think they are simply a mirror to society – a representation of all the myriad kinds of people that exist. My protagonist will always have a grey shade – from Chandni Bar (2001) to Fashion (2008). Priyanka Chopra was actually worried about taking up the role (in Fashion) because of what it would do to her image. But every film provides redemption for each of these characters – where the person comes out with flying colours.” I wonder if redemption is a mirror to real life....The Cirque du Soleil show was a colourful blend of acrobats, jugglers, clowns, colours, masks and immense talent. It had us catch our breath ever so often as the performers catapulted themselves into the topmost echelons of artistic delivery. It also stood as a resounding metaphor for showbiz – a cruel make-believe world that weaves a magic wand and creates an aura of stardom. The ‘stars’ have no choice but to keep this myth alive. As I met some of the assistants – the make-up artistes, the hair stylists and the myriad staff that create the ‘look’ of the star, I found that they were loyal to their own, and busy tearing apart the rest. The models and the dancers were either stubbornly steering clear of showbiz, or trying to wheedle their way in. Fans, the fuel to stardom, were as fickle as they were loyal.It is lonely at the top. It is also crowded, messy, competitive and superficial. And yet there are people like Javed and Farhan Akhtar whose accessibility and soft-spoken countenance makes one re-evaluate the black and white of stardom. Is it simply the on-screen persona that matters, or is it something more?Being Hrithik Hrithik Roshan was charmingly affable and confidently reserved. He fielded questions about his personal life with ease and without a flicker of annoyance. Waiting for 45 minutes outside his room (with a host of other media) to speak to him, seemed to be well worth the wait. He will be seen next in Kites with Mexican actress Barbara Mori; and will begin work in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next untitled film alongside Aishwarya Rai Bachchan – which he considers to be a dream role, the first after Koi Mil Gaya.On not playing a really negative role
“In Dhoom 2 (2006), the idea was to make the bad look good. I have hardly done that many films – I do a film a year. I have no reservations on playing a completely negative character. The idea is to explore the boundaries of my talent as much as possible. Something that is exciting and that scares the hell out of me – I would do it!
